Mozambique Airlines (LAM) will offer its Muslim passengers dates so they can break their fast during flights over Ramadan, the company announced on Tuesday.
“We have a number of flights in the air at sunset, and we plan to solve our passengers’ problem of how to break the fast in a dignified, traditional way,” LAM Director General João Carlos Pó Jorge said.
Pó Jorge was speaking in Maputo after signing a memorandum of understanding with the Mohammedan Community of Mozambique providing for the supply of 3,600 individual packages of dates to the company.
A spokesman for the Mohammedan Community, Issufo Momade, said the idea came during an informal conversation.
“The president of the community has embraced the project of offering 3,600 ‘kits’ for now, but that can be extended so that more people can break the fast,” he explained.
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, and its attendant fast constitutes the fourth of the five pillars of Islam. This year, Ramadan began on May 5, and runs until June 4.
During this period of reflection, Muslims are bound to fast from sunrise to sunset. The fast should be broken immediately after sunset, traditionally with water or dates.
