Ramadan delayed as new moon not sighted

The new moon has not been sighted in Saudi Arabia and Muslims around the world will have to wait a bit longer to mark the start of Ramadan.

In South Africa, the expectation always was that Ramadan would start on Thursday.
The holy period is expected to run into mid-June.
During this period, practicing Muslims who are able to, are barred from eating between sunrise and sunset.
The aim of the fast is to help teach Muslims self-restraint, discipline and generosity.
There are over 1,5 billion Muslims worldwide.
