Maputo, Matola, Beira and Quelimane municipalities are in danger of being flooded during the first quarter of next year, Technical Director of the National Directorate of Water Resources Management Agostinho Vilanculos said during a disaster management meeting in Maputo on Friday.
Vilanculos said some water courses might overflow in the next rainy season, inundating coastal communities, but National Institute of Meteorology representative Isaías Raiva said that rain would benefit the agricultural sector.
The meeting reviewed activities carried out by the government and partners with a view to mitigating the severe drought that affected particularly the southern and central regions of the country in 2015-2016.
According to National Institute of Disaster Management spokesman Paulo Tomas, more than US$200 million dollars were invested in combating drought.
