Mozambique Elections: CTA asks for escorts in corridors and police at multinationals
The number of deaths in Mozambique caused by weather events during the rainy season now stands at fifty, according to Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism, Ana Comoana.
Comoana was speaking to reporters on Tuesday at the end of the weekly meeting of the Council of Ministers (Cabinet). She revealed that events during the rainy season, which runs from October to March, also resulted in 72 people being injured and affected 17,271 families (84,621 people). The deadliest phenomenon was lightning strikes.
Comoana added that heavy rains destroyed 18 health units and 138 classrooms affecting 37,262 students. It also damaged or destroyed 7,081 houses and 59,414 hectares of agricultural land cultivated by 30,150 farmers. However, Comoana pointed out that storms only affected one per cent of farmland.
During the Cabinet meeting, the government approved the regulation covering marine science research which establishes the legal procedures to be adopted in line with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
The government also expressed its satisfaction at the binding Sales and Purchase Agreements that the operator of Rovuma Basin Offshore Area One, the US company Anadarko, has reached for the export of Liquefied Natural Gas. It is expected that these binding sales will be sufficient for the consortium led by Anadarko to take the Final Investment Decision that will open the door for huge investments for the construction of an LNG factory in the northern province of Cabo Delgado.
