Potholes in main roads, almost impassable streets and flooded houses were among the visible signs of Wednesday’s rains in Maputo and Matola. The situation altered the daily routine of many families, especially in flood-prone neighbourhoods, and brought to the surface again the problems the two cities experience in rainy periods.
For example, a huge crater opened on OAU Avenue, near Prça 16 de Junho. The fury of rainwater threatened road traffic and destroyed some boundary walls.
Chamanculo, Mafalala, Inhagóia, Laulane, Hulene, Mavalane, Mahlazine were among the neighbourhoods affected in Maputo, while Matola-700, Liberdade, Infulene and Machava-Sede in Matola municipality were flooded, making circulation difficult for both people and vehicles.
Strong winds left at least three families without shelter in Matola, Health, Social Action and Civil Society Councillor Paula Jacude said.
There were no casualties in Maputo but two streets in Chamanculo were temporarily blocked, craters opened up in some place and houses lost their roofs, the flying sheets of zinc and garbage and soils piling into drainage ditches.
Many families had to leave their homes to seek shelter in homes of relatives, friends and neighbours. Maputo Health and Social Action Advisor Yolanda Samuel said that public institutions were functioning normally even though Hulene and Xipamanine Health Centres had been flooded.
“It was a lot of rain but it did not cause a lot of damage. We had families whose zinc roofs blew off, but the situation is under control,” she said.
Yesterday morning, city council teams were busy cleaning drainage ditches on major avenues and removing the sand which had drifted onto OAU Avenue, affecting circulation.
