Two people died, one by drowning and the other struck by lightning, in torrential rain in Tete municipality late on Monday afternoon.
A child swept away by rainwater at Unidade 3 de Janeiro in Chingodzi neighborhood was rescued and evacuated to the Matundo Health Centre where he received medical care.
About conventional 120 houses, and many more of more precarious construction, collapsed in Tete’s nine neighborhoods. Among other social infrastructure, access roads and electricity poles were also damaged.
President of Tete Municipal Council Celestino Checamhaza said yesterday that a preliminary survey had found some people were homeless, and others staying with family and friends. Work quantifying the damage caused by the rain was ongoing, he said.
Checanhanza added that about 200 houses were still flooded, and neighbourhood administrative structures were encouraging the population to move to safe areas.
“We were taken by surprise, and only yesterday morning, Tuesday, did we begin to identify affected families and take relief measures. We are trying to accommodate those who have been left without a roof over their heads,” Checanhanza said.
The rain completely flooded 26 vegetable farms in the Nhartanda valley’s Josina Machel neighborhood.
Teams from Mozambique Electricity and FIPAG, both of which had equipment damaged, were already out on site installing replacements in order to restore electricity and drinking water supplies.
The City of Lichinga Health Directorate is working with neighborhood structures in door-to-door awareness campaigns to ensure primary health care.
