Radio Mozambique Zambezia journalist Gil Borges Namelo was “brutally beaten” on Thursday morning outside the Lisboa bar on Av. Liberdade in Quelimane, Municipal Council Director of Communications Zito Rosario reported yesterday,
Ossumane says the incident took place on Thursday morning as Namelo was heading to work, and that he was “beaten savagely in a public street, by people believed to have been sent there for that purpose”.
The journalist is out of danger and recovering from his injuries, but so far there has been no official statement from the radio station or the Zambezia Union of Journalists.
The incident was reportedly witnessed by police officers who, according to sources cited by Txopela, failed to provide the support the journalist was entitled to expect. Quelimane council has strongly repudiated any kind of aggression against members of the public, “especially press professionals doing their jobs,” and has “urged the authorities to apprehend and punish those responsible.”
