An angry crowd on Monday sacked a house in the central Mozambican city of Quelimane belonging to the main suspect in the case of the brutal murder and mutilation of a nine year old child, according to a report on the independent television station STV.
The body of the boy was discovered on Sunday on a rubbish tip near a Quelimane market. Those who discovered the corpse were particularly shocked to find that it had been mutilated. The murderers had cut out their victim’s heart, genital and eyes, and cut off the arms and feet.
The boy’s grief-stricken grandfather, Hortencio Candido, told reporters “it can’t be accepted that this is done to a human being. We demand justice”.
The boy had gone missing last Thursday. The police say there are signs that the body had been refrigerated, prior to being dumped on the rubbish tip. It is presumed that the body parts removed were to be used in black magic rituals.
The suspect (whose name has not been released) is a teacher by profession, who works in the nearby district of Nicoadala. He denies having anything to do with the murder, although the police insist there are strong signs of his involvement.
After the attack on Monday morning, the police put a guard on the house to ensure there would be no further vandalism.
