Mozambique: Fight against terrorism “remains top priority”

The president of Frelimo, Filipe Nyusi, says it is necessary to purge anything that can harm the party and the country in general.
Speaking at the conclusion of the eleventh Frelimo Congress, held since last Tuesday in Matola, Nyusi stressed that decisions taken at the Congress would impact not only on the party but also on the lives of all Mozambicans.
“The eleventh Congress was characterised by openness, transparency, tolerance and reconciliation. This tradition must guide us, therefore, in the essence of what we consider party discipline, the need to adjust to the interests of the group to the detriment of personal interests. It has been proved that Frelimo survives and thrives, not because of individuals, but because of generations of its militants who watch and energetically observe its fundamental principles. From today, we must clearly assume that it is our responsibility to purge what can harm them as a party and as a nation, at the risk of becoming complicit in deviant behaviour,” Frelimo President Filipe Nyusi said.
Congress elected Nyusi party president and its candidate for the 2019 presidential elections, and approved the Frelimo programme for the next five years.
The 11th Congress also saw Roque Silva Manuel elected as secretary general of Frelimo and Raimundo Diomba as secretary of the Committee of Verification of the Central Committee of Frelimo.
The new members of the Central Committee and the Political Commission were also elected including Tomaz Salomão, Jaime Basílio Monteiro, Nyeleti Mondlane, Manuel Tomé among others.
