Mozambique: Independence day attracts vendors to stadium, optimism about future
A court in Beira, Sofala province, has sentenced J.A., a civil servant at the Inhamizua Teacher Training Institute, to six months in prison for fraud.
J.A. was found guilty by the court of receiving 30,000 meticais and two goats in exchange for securing two places at the institute for a Beira citizen in 2013.
The defendant was ordered to repay the money and property (30,00 meticais and the two goats) to the plaintiff and pay the maximum justice tax of 200 meticais daily, plus 1000 meticais in favour of her state appointed lawyer.
Diario de Mozambique quoted Judge Cornélio da Conceição as saying that the court had proved the accused had committed the crime and had acted deliberately.
The defendant confessed to the crime at the start of the trial and demonstrated repentance. She said she did it because she needed money.
