Renamo gunmen attacked a government motorcade on its way from the village of Catandica, in Báruè district, to Chimoio, capital of Manica province, on Monday at around 4p.m., according to state-owned Agência de Informação de Moçambique (AIM).
The government delegation was returning from the 99th anniversary celebrations of the Báruè revolt against colonial domination known as Macombe’s Resistance, and it included among its members Provincial Director of Labour, Employment and Social Security, Mouzinho Carlos, who was in representation of Manica governor Alberto Mondlane.
They were joined in convoy by dozens of civilian vehicles that were being escorted by a police (PRM) unit which included an armoured assault vehicle.
The attack took place in Nhamtema, administrative post of Honde, at around 4 p.m. when the governmental delegation had slowed for a dangerous bend. Residents of a nearby village deserted their homes and shops and fled in panic.
AIM reports that “injured members of the convoy” were transported to the Provincial Hospital in Chimoio, for medical care.
Still according to the same source, “large-calibre weapons were fired,” temporarily interrupting traffic on National Road 7 linking Tete to Chimoio. Normal traffic was restored within the hour.
The police withheld comment pending a full press briefing today Tuesday.
