A proposal for the revision of the Labour Law is to be submitted to the Mozambican Council of Ministers in October. The proposed amendments include new provisions on maternity leave, disciplinary procedures and social protection of workers, with a view to adjusting the law to the current economic and social situation in the country.
As part of the process, a technical team comprising members of government and private sector and trade union representatives is preparing the terms of reference for public consultations to collect input for the proposal.
After consultations, contributions will be submitted to the Labour Advisory Commission (CCT), which will endorse a proposal for the Council of Ministers.
National Director of Labour, Marta Maté, says the intention is to submit the proposal for revision of the Labour Law in October, so that the Assembly of the Republic can debate and vote on the bill later this year.
At this stage in the process, however, there is still no consensus on the specific points to be reviewed, Maté pointed out.
The process for the revision of the Labour Law began in March last year, with consultations at central and provincial level. The first suggestions were then put together and presented in May of this year.
Ten years after approval, several segments of society agree that the 2007 Labour Law (no. 23/2007, of 1 August) is out of date and needs updating.
