Provincial Commander of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) in Cabo Delgado, Vicente Chicote, warns that the emergence of a group of “local volunteers, called Namparamas”, supposedly made immune to attack during the pursuit of terrorists by traditional healers, must not become a place of refuge for the enemy.
At the moment, the enthusiasm of young volunteers to be ‘vaccinated’ on the basis of that belief is apparent in the districts of Namuno, Montepuez and Balama, further south in Cabo Delgado province.
Speaking this Monday in the city of Pemba, during the patenting of police officers, Vicente Chicote said he feared that terrorists could infiltrate those groups and take advantage of the distraction of people in the communities to continue making incursions, and he was therefore urging greater collaboration between those groups and government forces.
The commander of the PRM made these statements shortly after information circulated that the ‘Namparamas’ had killed people suspected of being terrorists in the district of Montepuez.
‘Carta’ heard that the Namparamas killed a young man in the Montepuez district after a woman accused him of killing one of her relatives in Mocímboa da Praia, where she used to live.
Another reported incident suggests that a driver of a Chinese-run logging company was killed after being found with keys and other materials on his way to a camp to repair a broken down vehicle.
Also in Montepuez district, two young men found in a machamba and unable to speak Emakwa, the prevalent local language, were killed and their bodies abandoned.
