The Mozambique Police (PRM) on Tuesday accused the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo) of attacking a Defence and Security Forces patrol in the province of Manica in central Mozambique.
Speaking at the weekly police press conference, PRM general command spokesman Inacio Dina said that the attack was launched at 13:00 p.m. against a Defence and Security Forces patrol in Barue district.
“Right now, the hunt for the Renamo men who continue to sow terror in the region is ongoing,” Dina said. He was unable to give any details regarding injuries or fatalities.
“Out colleagues are in pursuit and we hope to have more information in due course,” he said.
Mozambique has seen an escalation of political violence, with reports of clashes between Renamo and the Defence and Security Forces, as well as mutual accusations of abductions and assassinations of militants on both sides.
Renamo has been accused by the authorities of several attacks on the main roads of the center of the country, including against civilian targets, justified by the leader of the opposition on the grounds that military personnel is transported in public transport vehicles.
The Mozambican government and Renamo last week resumed talks in Maputo aimed at ending the political and military crisis in the country, several months after Renamo withdrew from negotiations citing lack of progress and a perceived lack of sincerity on the part of the government.
Renamo has a long-standing demand to govern in the six provinces in the north of the country where it claims victory in the general elections of October 2014.
