Mozambique: ‘Anibalzinho’ freed after serving full sentence in journalist Carlos Cardoso murder ...
18 prisoners escaped last week from the jail in the northern Mozambican port city of Nacala, according to the Nampula Provincial Police Command.
The spokesperson for the command, Zacarias Nacute, told reporters on Monday that only seven of the escapees have been recaptured, and the other 11 are still on the run. He admitted that the police have no clues as to their whereabouts.
Speaking in his weekly press briefing, Nacute said the circumstances of this break-out are not yet known, but promised that the police are working to clarify the matter and recapture all the fugitives. Reporters pointed out that this was just the latest in a long stream of mysterious escapes from Nampula prisons.
“Unfortunately we don’t know how it is that prisoners are always escaping from jails where there are guards”, Nacute replied. “Our task is to neutralize suspects, while it is the job of the prison guards to keep them locked up. It is up to the prison authorities to explain this”.
The police have called for the cooperation of the local population in tracking down the escaped prisoners.
Nacute also told the briefing that last week the Nampula police arrested four members of a gang who had been committing armed robberies against shops in Meconta district.
“The people now under arrest were terrorizing that region”, he said. “They were detained thanks to complaints from their victims and denunciations from members of the public”.
