The Central Prison in Beira, central Mozambique, today announced the arrest of two prison guards on suspicion of facilitating the escape of eight prisoners in 2018, including one suspected of murdering a Portuguese citizen.
The director of the Beira Central Prison, Yzalde de Sousa, said the two guards are suspected of having supplied the saw blades that the escapees used to cut through window gratings before fleeing in November of last year.
The arrests were the result of an investigation by the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC).
The escape took place in the early hours of November 4 last year. Among those who escaped is a man suspected of involvement in the murder of Portuguese citizen Inês Bota in December 2017.
