The suspension of the printing of provisional driving licences is causing inconvenience to drivers in the Maputo metropolitan region, some of whom are opting to mothball their vehicles to avoid problems on the roads.
The National Institute of Road Transport (INATRO) in Maputo is not printing provisional licences, and biometric licences have not been produced since December.
Drivers told ‘Notícias’ that they have been going to INATRO in Maputo to obtain licences, only to be told that there is a problems with the data capture system, and no deadline for normalisation in prospect.
“I was here on Friday but was unable to obtain the licence due to system problems reported by employees, and the same argument was used today (yesterday),” said João José.
António Dias, another driver who wanted to renew his licence, said he has not been able to obtain one since Thursday, so he had parked his car up, so as not to have any issues with the Traffic Police.
“I’m afraid that the police will fine me for not having a driver’s licence, so I preferred to park the car up. The worst thing is that they don’t know when the situation will be resolved. It’s a bind to come here every day and get the same information,” he said.
INATRO spokesman Jorge Muiambo told ‘Notícias’ that he has no information about what is happening in the city institution and could not comment on the matter, and if there are reports of system problems, the newspaper should seek explanations from the IT staff.
Rodrigues Zucula, head of the Central Department of the Traffic Police, said he was aware of the hold-up, but that he had not received official information from INATRO.
He also said there were no cases of drivers without driving documents being sanctioned had been recorded, and that the authorities would continue to consider expired drivers licences valid.
