Control of price speculation in the domestic market can help minimise the impact of the increase in the cost of living in the country, Prime Minister Carlos Agostinho do Rosario said yesterday at the inauuration of a new team to the National Economic Activities Inspectorate (INAE).
The prime minister underlined the INAE mission to protect the public interest and improve the country’s business environment.
“The INAE should continue raising awareness of consumer rights among all those involved in the economy, focusing on educational action and combating corruption in the conduct of its employees and agents,” he said.
At yesterday’s mid-morning ceremony, the prime minister swore in Maria Fernandes Freitas inspector general of the INAE and Acacio João Armando Foia deputy inspector general.
In a brief speech, Maria Fernandes Freitas promised to continue the institution’s activities within the framework of the objectives laid out in the government’s five-year plan.
Addressing demands for a rise in the price of bread recently made by the Mozambican Association of Bakers (AMOPÃO), the inspector general said that the INAE would continue to prioritise dialogue with the bakers and other business sectors in order to avoid price speculation.
The outgoing inspector general, Jose Rodolfo, said he was leaving office with the feeling of accomplishment, arguing that during his five-year term, his team was able to extend inspection activities to the whole country.
“The National Inspectorate of Economic Activities has come from nothing, and during this period of five and a half years, I believe we have been able to establish and consolidate the institution and make its presence felt throughout the country, which was not easy. We were able to carry out our mission within the limits imposed by our material and human resources,” he said.
In his recommendations to the new team, Rodolfo urged them to focus on consolidating the institution and capacity-building in human resources.
“The institution also has many weaknesses in material and human terms, not only in quantity but also in quality. We must acquaint staff with modern methods of economic activity so as to cover the entire spectrum, especially with the advent of internet commerce” he said.
