In a statement to Mozambican journalists following the meetings, President Nyusi highlighted the fundamental role of dialogue in the stability of any country. He revealed that he had shared with President Jose Mario Vaz Mozambique’s experience in establishing peace, tranquillity and stability.
President Jose Mario Vaz spoke of preparations for forthcoming elections, the recently formed inclusive government, and the appointment of the consensus Prime Minister Aristides Gomes. He told journalists, “I leave here very satisfied with the knowledge President Nyusi has shared. The information he gave me on Mozambique’s experience will be part of our process”.
He added that he hopes in the near future relations between the two countries will be further strengthened.
President Nyusi stressed the importance of peace and stability for a country’s development. He explained, “the main thrust of our meeting was to stress the role of dialogue in a country’s stability and we conveyed our experience in this field”.
Following his meeting with President Nyusi, Jose Viegas Filho told journalists that the United Nations is satisfied with the way in which the peace process is being handled in Mozambique. He congratulated the President for the consensus reached on the demilitarisation of the opposition party Renamo, a situation that has pleased the international community as it will greatly contribute to stability in the country.
Regarding the political process in Guinea Bissau, Filho stressed that the country is sovereign. However, he pointed out that the United Nations considers stability to be linked to the holding of elections as scheduled on 18 November. He noted, “although this is a sovereign decision of Guinea Bissau, there is hope that this will happen”.
