Mozambique: President appoints Carlos Mondlane as Judge Counsellor of the Supreme Court

The face-to-face meeting between Filipe Nyusi and the French president, Emanuel Macron was one of the highlights of the visit by the Mozambican head of state to France. Reporting on his visit, President Nyusi announced that France was ready to assist in the fight against terrorism.
“It became clear that Mozambique and France share vital economic interests, the success of which involves an environment of peace, security and stability in Mozambique. We reaffirmed our commitment to the restoration of peace and security and normality in the areas affected by the barbaric acts of terrorists, we shared the measures that our country has been taking to end this scourge and the solidarity and interest in supporting in the fight against terrorism by bilateral and multilateral partners,” the head of state told a press conference.
Filipe Nyusi made it known that President Macron was in solidarity with the Mozambicans and strongly condemned the terrorist acts, with the two heads of state pledging to work together to restore security and tranquillity and resume socio-economic activities.
“We received assurances from President Macron about continued support to French companies to continue and expand their investments in Mozambique and, equally, we analysed other challenges facing the world and our two countries in particular, those which stem from the Covid-19 pandemic and the necessity of fulfilling the commitments in the framework of the Paris agreement on the environment and other conventions on the matter. President Emmanuel Macron reiterated his support for Mozambique’s candidacy for a non-permanent member [seat] on the United Nations Security Council,” Nyusi affirmed.
The president’s visit to France was also marked by the signing of four legal instruments, namely the memorandum of understanding on political consultations, an agreement on the suspension of debt service, the financing agreement for the reduction of non-technical losses by EDM, the memorandum understanding between the Bank of Mozambique and the French Development Agency and for the beginning of a programme of technical assistance to the Bank of Mozambique with the objective of combating money laundering and financing of terrorism.
President Nyusi also revealed that the airline Air France had reiterated its intention to resume flights to the country in late October. Constraints imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic had delayed the execution of the plan.
The president also held bilateral meetings with several heads of state and government, including the presidents of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, and of Rwanda, Paul Kagame, and the Prime Minister of Portugal, Antonio Costa, with whom he exchanged views on the political and economic situation in their countries, as well as the main challenges facing them, especially Covid-19, financing for African economies and security challenges as a factor in boosting socio-economic development.
