The president reiterated on Thursday that the government had responded to the letter from the Renamo leader’s office proposing the withdrawal of defence and security forces from Gorongosa, reports Rádio Moçambique.
President Nyusi confirmed having received the letter and said a copy had been sent to the government delegation in the Joint Commission of the political dialogue.
The head of state stressed that the letter was answered and emphasised his willingness to talk to Renamo leader Afonso Dhlakama in order to secure peace in the country.
“The information I have is that they answered [Renamo’s letter]. So there is no answer to be given by the president if the answer is already out in the debate. They are there to discuss, they are not middlemen to go there to hear what the other party says and then come tell me. This shortens the discussion circuit and allows for us to debate quickly. If necessary, then we will talk directly; [we must] not turn great people into errand boys. At least those that I propsed are not, they have to be able to put positions at all times. Now, if others need to go consult at all times, ours do not,” the president said.
In an interview with Radio Moçambique on Wednesday, the head of the government delegation Jacinto Veloso said that as soon as Renamo stopped their armed actions, the president would order a halt to armed action against Renamo strongholds.
The Head of the Government delegation stated that the letter from Renamo had been answered.
“The answer is: The Armed Defense Forces of Mozambique will not move from where they are. If there is a ceasefire, whether of Renamo or the government, the armed forces will remain where they are, on condition, of course, that there is no further fire, no more shots,” said Jacinto Veloso.
