Speaking to the Mozambican press accompanying him to the funeral of Robert Mugabe in Harare on Saturday, President of the Republic Filipe Nyusi praised the human and leadership qualities of the former Zimbabwean president, who died of an illness last month.
Robert Mugabe’s lying in state was held at the Zimbabwe National Stadium and attended by hundreds of African citizens and many African heads of state and government.
President Nyusi told reporters that Mozambique could not fail to attend, because of the historical ties of friendship and cooperation uniting the two peoples.
“We are natural godparents of the independence of these people, and it would be totally inappropriate not to come to bid farewell to a leader who worked hard for the liberation of his country and his people, and did so much for the growth of Africa,” Nyusi said.
Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa thanked those present for the gesture of solidarity, and stressed that the new generation must safeguard the legacy left by Robert Mugabe.
