Mozambique: Prosecution turns Mondlane's own words against him - AIM
The president of the Mozambican Bar Association, Tomas Timbane, said on Tuesday in Maputo that the country is experiencing a war climate that nobody can disguise anymore and is failing in its commitment to the rule of law.
“Our hearts can only be injured by the climate of war that nobody disguises anymore. When a political party is armed and fights the state it is a sign that we are failing in what is essential. We are failing in the commitment to the rule of law,” Timbane said.
Speaking during the official opening of the judicial year, the bar association president pointed out that instability is destroying the country and delaying the achievements which, with great sacrifice, the country has accomplished over the years.
“The rule of law cannot be a simple buzzword. The rule of law must condition and determine our lives because it alone ensures equality. If it is not the law to bring us equality, it will be chaos, simply because that also makes us equal – because equally vulnerable,” he said.
Timbane said that nationality is not built without structure and foundation, and that no-one can achieve justice through attacks on the rule of law.
The political and military crisis in Mozambique has deteriorated in recent weeks, with attacks on military and civilian vehicles in two sections of the country’s main highway in Sofala province in central Mozambique attributed to the armed wing of Renamo and military clashes also recorded in Zambezia and Tete.
Negotiations between the government and Renamo are blocked due to the opposition party’s refusal to resume the dialogue without guarantees that it will rule in the six provinces where it claims victory in the general elections in 2014.
