Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi on Friday in Pemba, in the northern province of Cabo Delgado, opened a seminar on local business opportunities linked to the natural gas megaprojects. The event is organised by the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy and the US oil company Anadarko.
Anadarko is the operator of Offshore Area One of the Rovuma Basin, off the coast of Cabo Delgado. It has discovered 75 trillion cubic feet of natural gas and intends to build two plants to produce 12.88 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) per year. The company plans to make its final investment decision next year which will open the door to suppliers to provide services such as construction, transport, housing, catering, and security.
Opening the seminar, President Nyusi noted, “we all know that our country has many challenges. However, the country has natural resources that mainly lie in the ground. Our intention is to transform these resources into riches”.
He noted that the government has worked with Anadarko and other companies in the private sector on the exploration for natural gas but added that this seminar turns attention to how to transform the discoveries into wealth which serves the people of Mozambique.
President Nyusi has made many business links during visits to Texas and Washington. He told the seminar, “whilst in Texas, we established contacts to discuss how to put the discoveries into production and how to place information in front of the Mozambican people with maximum transparency”.
Anadarko has offered to support small and medium-sized companies and plans to create five thousand jobs. President Nyusi said that of these posts, 1,500 will be for Mozambicans living in Palma and Mocimboa da Praia. He also stressed the gas project will expand other activities such as agriculture, fishing, and health services.
Anadarko plans to open its LNG facilities in 2023 or 2024. The neighbouring concession, Offshore Area Four, contains 85 trillion cubic feet of gas and its operator, Italy’s ENI, plans to build a facility capable of producing 15.2 million tonnes of LNG per year beginning in 2024. In addition, it will have a Floating LNG platform operational by 2022. However, as this is offshore it will not provide as many job opportunities for Mozambicans as the land-based factories.
