Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi on Monday began a three-day working visit to the northern province of Nampula.
During his trip, he will travel to the districts of Liupo, Monapo, Muecate, Nacaroa and Mecuburi, where he will meet local officials, visit economic enterprises, and speak to people at rallies.
On Monday morning in Liupo, the President told those attending a rally that there is no sense in the attacks carried out by armed men from the opposition party Renamo given that it is taking part in discussions with the government about arranging a high-level meeting to restore peace.
President Nyusi was referring to a Joint Commission that has been set up to prepare for a face to face meeting between him and the leader of Renamo, Afonso Dhlakama. The government has conceded to the demand by Renamo that international mediators be invited to participate in future dialogue, but this has not been enough to halt the ambushes and attacks carried out by Renamo militias in the centre of the country.
The President told the residents of Liupo that the armed attacks have resulted in the loss of human life and the destruction of property – particularly vehicles transporting goods. President Nyusi lamented, “I have recently been speaking with Renamo leader Afonso Dhlakama about our meeting … however, he insists on sending his men to kill people”.
President Nyusi added, “democracy does not mean taking people’s lives to take power. Do not resort to arms to destroy the country and its achievements”.
In the afternoon, the President travelled to Monapo where he opened the provincial Teacher Training Institute.
The President also inaugurated a new district hospital, which has 65 beds and can deal with outpatients, emergencies, operations, and maternities. It has a morgue, a laboratory, and a pharmacy, and was built at a cost of 5.9 million euros (about 6.6 million US dollars) funded by a soft loan from Austria.
Speaking during the opening ceremony, President Nyusi expressed his concern that during his visit he had met with three young women who had just undergone emergency caesarean sections. He called on the audience to warn girls of the dangers of getting pregnant.
During his tour of the province, President Nyusi is being accompanied by Labour Minister Vitoria Diogo, Science Minister Jorge Nhambiu, Justice Minister Isaque Chande, Deputy Interior Minister Jose Coimbra, Deputy Minister of State Administration Roque Samuel, Deputy Minister of Gender, Children and Social Welfare Lucas Mangrasse, and members of the presidential office.
