President Nyusi made a working visit to the Niassa Reserve on November 2, 2018, where he learned about the current illegal elephant hunting situation.
The head of state’s visit was aimed at monitoring the progress and effectiveness of the government’s efforts to control the wave of poaching that has decimated the country’s largest single elephant population.
One of the main objectives of this five-year government has been to reverse the trend of poaching, which is threatening key species of the country’s wildlife.
During his visit, the president emphasised the importance of the reserve, which is one of largest in Africa, and encouraged the local government to continue its healthy relationship with the reserve, thereby mitigating conflicts arising from the management of natural resources.
The president also stressed the importance of recognising the role of local communities as guardians of biodiversity and natural resources.
The president was accompanied on his trip by the Minister of Land, Environment and Rural Development, Celso Correia.
