President Filipe Nyusi of Mozambique, currently on a state visit to Italy, will today, Monday 8 July, visit The Community of Sant’Egidio, in Trastevere, Rome, where he will meet founder Andrea Riccardi, president Marco Impagliazzo and other significant members of the organisation.
At the end of the meeting, which takes place two months before Pope Francis’s visit to Mozambique, President Nyusi will make a statement to the press.
Sant’Egidio has numerous communities in all parts of Mozambique. It has Schools for Peace in city suburbs and villages, where it supports street children and the elderly, and works to improve the living conditions of detainees in the nation’s prisons.
The Community of Sant’Egidio is also known for its DREAM programme for AIDS treatment, which has now spread from Mozambique to ten other African countries.
Sant’Egidio’s recent humanitarian actions have concentrated on Beira, a city badly affected by Cyclone Idai, which struck an extensive region of the country on March 14th, causing hundreds of deaths and displacing thousands.
