Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi has inaugurated a Teacher Training Institute in Monapo district, in the northern province of Nampula.
The institute cost ten million dollars to construct and received financial support from the Japanese government through the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA). It has ten classrooms, a computer room, a library, a natural sciences laboratory, an art studio, a music room, a gymnasium, a dormitory for 400 students, and housing for the teachers.
Construction work began in March 2014 and was completed in December last year.
There are now 25 teacher training institutes in Mozambique. Five of these have been built with support from the Japanese government – in Chibututuine (opened in 1998), Xai-Xai (2004), Chimoio (2006), Cuamba (2008), and Monapo.
Nampula province has 987,000 primary school students but has a severe shortage of trained teachers. Thus, there is an urgent need to intensify teacher training.
The President is on a three-day working visit to Nampula province which ends on Wednesday.
During his tour of the province, President Nyusi is being accompanied by Labour Minister Vitoria Diogo, Science Minister Jorge Nhambiu, Justice Minister Isaque Chande, Deputy Interior Minister Jose Coimbra, Deputy Minister of State Administration Roque Samuel, Deputy Minister of Gender, Children and Social Welfare Lucas Mangrasse, and members of the presidential office.
