The head of the Mozambican state, President Filipe Nyusi, said on Tuesday in Maputo that the economic crisis the country is experiencing will not be resolved by tears, but by development projects.
President Nyusi was speaking at the official opening of the AFEC Gloria Hotel on Avenida Marginal, built by Anhui Foreign Economic Construction (AFEC) at an estimated cost of US$300 million.
The president said the infrastructure was a springboard to dynamic tourism in Mozambique, strategically positioned and able to accommodate people of different nationalities.
“The building we are today inaugurating will contribute to the reception of tourists from all corners of the world,” Nyusi said, adding that the project comes in the wake of agreements signed by the Mozambican government and AFEC for the development of the Joaquim Chissano conference centre.
The hotel will provide more jobs for young Mozambicans and make Mozambique one of the main tourism destinations in Africa and the world.
“This building creates conditions to make Mozambique the main tourist destination in Africa by 2025, promoting jobs for young people,” Nyusi said, stressing that “the economic crisis the country is experiencing will not respond to tears, but to projects of this nature”.
The hotel, he said, would enable Mozambique to host large and varied international events with significant impact on the national economy in terms of revenue collection.
The five-star hotel has 257 rooms, a 2,000-seat conference hall, a banqueting hall for 800 people and a business centre.
