Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi has condemned the attacks that have been carried out in the district of Funhalouro by armed men from the opposition party Renamo.
Speaking in Funhalouro on Wednesday during a three-day working visit to the southern province of Inhambane, President Nyusi expressed his solidarity with the residents whose lives have been made precarious “for obvious reasons”. However, he expressed his hope that the situation will soon return to normal.
Some parts of the district have been the target of a violent campaign waged by Renamo in its efforts to seize power in the country’s six northern provinces. This resulted in the murder of civilians and the destruction of property. But it has also left local people living in fear.
At a rally, a local resident told the President that the armed gangs even removed human organs from their victims.
In July, armed men attacked the locality of Tsenane, where they murdered the wife of the local Frelimo secretary and burned down homes.
Speaking in Mapinhane, in the district of Vilankulo, President Nyusi stressed that Mozambicans want and deserve peace. He urged all patriots to appeal for peace and social harmony. The President added that it will be Mozambicans who resolve existing problems. However, he said that he did not want this process to help the violence to continue.
Throughout his provincial visit, the President was keen to tell local people that he did not want the enemies of peace to distract him from his dream of better living conditions. The President announced various initiatives to improve living standards, including the opening of eight new water wells and the repairing of a further thirty, upgrading the road between Funhalouro and Massinga, and repairs to the 25 kilometre stretch of road between Panda and Pululu.
On Wednesday President Nyusi also visited a cattle dip facility and a cashew plant nursery in Funhalouro, and a residential housing complex built by the South African company Sasol to accommodate employees from its natural gas processing facility at Temane.
