Mozambique: Lawyers demand investigation into attack on Mondlane supporter MC Trufafá

President Filipe Nyusi met the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini in New York on Wednesday to discuss bilateral cooperation and review the political, economic and social situation in Mozambique.
Mogherini made no statements to the press after the meeting, held at United Nations headquarters on the sidelines of the 71st annual session of the UN’s General Assembly.
Nyusi said that the parties discussed the progress of peace in Mozambique and exchanged views on the advances in the country’s relations with the International Monetary Fund.
The Mozambican government is reported to have reached an understanding with the IMF to conduct an independent audit of the accounts of Ematum, Proindicus and MAM, the three companies which benefited from the undeclared state-guaranteed loans which led programme partners, including the IMF, to suspend direct support to the state budget.
The audit to account for the more than US$1.4 billion dollars is to be conducted by the Attorney General, as the Mozambican government has always insisted.
“We have taken pains to dispel misunderstandings about the economic situation in Mozambique, and have received encouragement on the measures we are taking concerning both the dialogue to secure peace in Mozambique and to implement better transparency in the economic sphere,” the president said.
