President Filipe Nyusi wants solutions to the water crisis affecting Maputo.
Nyusi called for “short, medium and long term solutions” to the Maputo water shortage.
The president suggested that the root cause for the current crisis of the Maputo water supply was a lack of planning.
The level of water in the reservoir at the Pequenos Libombos dam on the Umbeluzi river is so law that, since 10 January, drinking water for Maputo and Matola cities and Boane district has been rationed, with each neighbourhood receiving water only on alternate days. Nyusi did not state exactly what planning measures he had in mind, but it is notable that the authorities did not sound the alarm until the reservoir was less than 14 per cent full, and no work had been undertaken on alternative water supplies.
“Maputo is the capital, I do not say that another city is not important, but it is the capital, and the quantity of people matters as well. We can not passively wait, until one day we say that there is no solution “, stressed the President of the Republic, cited by Rádio Moçambique.
The president also insisted that the government water supply body, FIPAG (Water Supply Investment and Assets Fund), and the Housing Promotion Fund (FFH) should ensure their sustainability by operating in a commercial fashion.
The Head of State was speaking after he toured the various specialist institutions that fall under the Public Works Ministry, such as the National Engineering Laboratory, the National Water Board, and the Housing Promotion Fund.
