The president of Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi, announced on Wednesday in Maputo that the demilitarisation of the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo) is set to start on Saturday, with the demobilisation and reintegration of the military arm of the main opposition party.
“I am pleased to announce that, as foreseen in the memorandum of understanding that the government has signed with Renamo, we will begin next Saturday, 6 October, the effective start of the process of demilitarisation, demobilisation and reintegration”, said Nyusi in a statement to the nation on the day of Peace and Reconciliation celebrated on 4 October in Mozambique.
“Until Saturday, all experts requested to witness the process, from Tanzania, Zimbabwe, United States of America, Switzerland, Germany, Norway, Ireland and India, who will be joined by general Javier Aquino from Argentina, the leader of the group,” Nyusi stated.
The Mozambican president urged Mozambicans and the international community to strive for a lasting peace so that the country can concentrate on the fight against poverty and the creation of prosperity, asking for the success of the operation.
Filipe Nyusi read a message from Pope Francis in which he urges Mozambicans to overcome their differences and to unite against the challenges to peace.
The day of Peace and Reconciliation evokes the signing of the general peace agreement between the Mozambican government and Renamo on 4 October 1992 and that ended 16 years of civil war.
This agreement did not prevent the country from having cycles of military violence, especially in periods after elections, due to the challenge of Renamo to the electoral results.
