President Filipe Nyusi yesterday promoted Rear Admiral Lázaro Henriques Lopes Menete to the rank of army general and appointed him Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces for the Defence of Mozambique (FADM). Menete was previously Commander of the Army Branch.
In another move, President Nyusi appointed Bernardino Rafael General Commander of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique, after having promoted him to the rank of Inspector-General of the Police, in the rank of General Officials.
The head of state yesterday also promoted Officer Timóteo Bernardo to the rank of Commissioner of Police at the rank of General Officials, and then appointed him to the post of Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Police.
The president also named Ezequiel Isac Muianga Commander of the Army Branch after promoting him to the post of Major General.
In another dispatch, the Mozambican Head of State promoted Brigadier Ezequiel Isac Muianga to the post of Major General and appointed him to the post of Army Commander.
President Nyusi also promoted, through separate legal provisions, Captain of the Sea and War Castelo Francisco Marecula to the rank of commodore; Eusebio Manuel Salumbia to the rank of First Deputy Commissioner of the Police; and Officers Cornélio Alberto Manguku and Sérgio Faustino Mamure Age to the rank of Deputy-Commissioner of the Police.
The new appointments come as a result of the reshuffle in the leadership of the police and army that began on Tuesday when President Nyusi appointed Júlio dos Santos Jane to the post of Director General of the State Information and Security Service (SISE).
Menete replaces Graça Chongo, who was dismissed from the post of Chief of General Staff of the FADM on Tuesday.
Bernardino Rafael will fill the vacancy left by Júlio dos Santos Jane, the Commander-in-Chief of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique, who was appointed to the post of Director General of the State Information and Security Service.
Timóteo Bernardo replaces José Weng San, police Deputy General Commander, who died last week after a long illness.
