The President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, today conducted the main ceremony commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Massacre of Mueda, in the province of Cabo Delgado.
Shortly after disembarking at the district capital town, President Nyusi laid a wreath at the Mueda monument and heard a message read by children on the occasion of African Children’s Day, which is also being celebrated today.
“We asked Papa Nyusi not to get tired of fighting for us,” one child said on behalf of all Mozambican children.
The children’s message calls for an end to the terrorist attacks in Cabo Delgado and the destabilisation carried out the Renamo military junta splinter group in the central region of the country.
It also calls on the government to continue to take all necessary measures to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus.
The Mueda Massacre was one of the last episodes of the resistance of the Mozambican people to colonial domination, and culminated in the death of more than 600 people, in a show of strength aimed at dissuading the Mozambican people from fighting for their independence.
The President of the Republic is accompanied on his trip to Cabo Delgado by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Verónica Macamo Dlhovo; of the Interior, Amade Miquidade; of Culture and Tourism, Eldevina Materula; of Combatants, Carlos Jorge Siliya; and staff members of the Presidency of the Republic and other state institutions.
