Mozambique’s president, Filipe Nyusi, on Monday launches the 2019-2020 agricultural campaign under the slogan “Mozambique increasing production and productivity, towards zero hunger”, against the risk of food insecurity that hangs over some regions of the country.
The drought in southern Mozambique and the armed attacks in the extreme north are the main threats, according to the Famine Early Warning Systems Network (Fews network), which brings together US organisations.
Those two regions are in a crisis phase, level three, of food risk, on a scale of one to five, from minimum risk to the most serious, respectively, according to the last report released at the beginning of the month.
The crisis phase (level three) persists in the areas of the semi-arid south, where families have faced a second consecutive year of poor harvests due to drought, the document said.
The same situation occurs in part of Cabo Delgado, where a armed conflict with insurgent groups continues and where tropical cyclone Kenneth in April interrupted the 2019 agricultural season, it said.
For those who work the land, the challenge is to increase productivity.
Filipe Nyusi launches the agricultural campaign in the town of Metuchira, Nhamatanda district.
This is an area of Sofala province in the centre of the country that was devastated in March by Cyclone Idai and that humanitarian aid has prevented the food shortage from worsening.
The head of state is expected to visit various vegetable production camps.
Nyusi is due to visit the city of Beira on Monday to inaugurate a fishing port dock in the provincial capital of Sofala.
