Mauritius back on top of Africa’s Happiness List, Mozambique ranks 5th in 2025
President Nyusi has been on a working visit to the province of Nampula over the weekend, and yesterday inaugurated the province’s new regional pharmaceutical warehouse, a press release on the presidency web page reports.
This is the second of its kind in the Mozambique, following on from the first one in Maputo City, and will facilitate the timely supply of medicines in good condition and in the quantities needed to address health problems in the province. It will also reduce transport costs and rental for satisfactory drug storage.
“The pharmaceutical warehouse was conceived within the framework of the Pharmaceutical Logistics Strategic Plan [PELF] as a way to improve medicine supply in the primary health network in the north of the country, and we expect it will guarantee the regular availability of drugs for the continuous care of all patients,” the president said.
The new warehouse brings together medical and surgical material, vaccines and other medicinal products, and can store 6,200 pallets seven levels high. It occupies an area of approximately 2.6 hectares in in the administrative post of Natiquiri. 15 kilometres distant from Nampula city.
The regional pharmaceutical warehouse is the largest in the country and will supply the provinces of Nampula, Niassa. Cabo Delgado and Zambezia. The project was funded by the government of the United States through USAID and cost US$8 million,
The president emphasised that he expects the facility to enjoy sound, responsible management.
“The system should not, and will not, see drugs stored until their expiry date, nor should it allow stock to become unavailable in the northern region of the country. Subvention schemes, particularly those involving health officials, should find no room in a warehouse equipped with modern control systems,” he said.
This drug storage system will address the problems of handling, physical damage, theft, poor stock monitoring and uncertainty in the delivery of medicines to health facilities.
