Access to quality energy may increase in Sofala province following the initiation of the Dondo substation and its 220 kilovolt transport line from Chibata, Manica, inaugurated yesterday by the president, Filipe Nyusi.
Speaking at a popular rally shortly after the inauguration, President Nyusi said that conditions were ripe for the development of the region, and expressed his desire to see new industries come to the municipality of Dondo with the increased electricity supply.
Although the substation already existed, the magnitude of the works carried out from 2012 to last November warrant being considered new construction. The unit went from 20 megavolts ampere to 150, more than double the energy needs of the city of Beira and district of the same name. The provincial capital of Sofala uses at peak 65 MVA and Dondo only seven.
In these circumstances, business people could no longer cite lack of electricity as a barrier to entrepreneurial activity in the region, the president said, and called for investment in cereal mills.
Dondo municipality already has a reference industrial park, with cement factories and other units, but the local administrator and Sofala governor Helena Taipo say there is plenty of room for further investments.
Filipe Nyusi acknowledged the efforts of Mozambique Electricity but said that more needed to be done, highlighting greater access, better quality and reliability and increasing internal generation, all challenges accepted by CEO Mateus Magala
The president urged the population to be vigilant against vandalism and theft, clandestine connection and non-payment.
The 170-kilometre line from Chibata to Dondo and the substation cost about US$48 million, allocated by the African Development Bank and OPEC Fund, who also supported the improvement of the Mafambisse and Lamego substations.
