The Mozambican head of state, Filipe Nyusi, on Wednesday regretted the death of former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Oldemiro Balói, highlighting his “invaluable contribution” to the good image of Mozambique abroad.
“He made an invaluable contribution to boosting diplomatic action and our country’s regional and international visibility in the concert of nations and in multilateral organisations,” the head of state says in a message distributed to the media.
The former Mozambican Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation died on Monday in hospital in South Africa, where he had been undergoing medical treatment for an illness since February 22. He was 66.
The head of state recalled that Balói had “boosted the economic activity of commerce, industry and tourism in the post-armed conflict [era]”, with the country experiencing high foreign investments.
“Oldemiro Balói gave his entire youth to the service of his country, performing all the functions entrusted to him with great selflessness, a high sense of mission, professionalism, zeal and patriotic spirit,” President Nyusi said. Balói died shortly after producing a study on armed insecurity in Cabo Delgado, at the request of the president himself, he added.
“We will keep, with eternal nostalgia, his life and legacy, as a source of inspiration for present and future generations of leaders, managers and patriots,” President Nyusi observed.
Oldemiro Balói was born in Maputo and led Mozambican diplomacy between 2008 and 2017, until 2015 under the presidency of Armando Guebuza, and from then under the leadership of Filipe Nyusi, the current president of Mozambique and president of the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo).
In 2019, Oldemiro Balói headed the CPLP observer mission to the presidential elections in Guinea-Bissau.
