Mozambican president Filipe Nyusi on Friday expressed support for greater cooperation with the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) bloc, highlighting the country’s privileged geographic location.
“Mozambique appreciates the need to deepen cooperation with the BRICS for the growth and sustainable development of our economies,” the Mozambican head of state said.
Filipe Nyusi was speaking at the BRICS Plus meeting, an event following the 10th BRICS Summit which took place between Wednesday and Friday in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The Mozambican head of state said that cooperation with the BRICS bloc should be based on mutual benefit, noting that Mozambique was showing signs of recovery from the crisis that has shaken the economy in the last two years.
“Mozambique possesses potential that can generate wealth in many areas, especially in tourism, agriculture, energy and fisheries,” the Mozambican president noted, highlighting the country’s “privileged geographical location”.
The theme of the BRICS summit was “Collaboration for Inclusive Growth and Shared Prosperity in the 4th Industrial Revolution”.
In addition to the Mozambican head of state, the BRICS Plus event was attended by the president of Angola, João Lourenço; of Namibia, Hage Geingo; of Gabon, Ali Bongo Ondimba; of Uganda, Yoweri Museveni, and of Rwanda, Paul Kagame.
The presidents of Argentina, Mauricio Marci, who presides over the G8, and of Turkey, Recep Erdogan, participated in the three-day summit as representatives of emerging BRICS economies.
The summit meeting in Johannesburg culminated in the adoption of the “Johannesburg Declaration” which includes targets agreed by the five BRICS member countries to be reached by the end of the year.
