President Filipe Nyusi on Wednesday characterised education as “the basis for the people to take the power”, demanding exemplary performance by directors of educational institutions in the country.
“The school must position itself as an excellent base for the people to take the power, and that is what is happening. The school must promote and develop an innovative spirit and also creativity and flexibility,” the Mozambican head of state said.
President Nyusi was speaking during the opening of a training seminar on school management arranged by the Ministry of Education and Human Development for directors of secondary schools in the south of the country.
For Nyusi, secondary education in Mozambique should deepen students’ knowledge and foster an innovative and entrepreneurial spirit.
“Students should think aloud, deeply and not simply emotionally,” the president said, promising that the government would continue to invest “a considerable part” of the state budget in education.
Filipe Nyusi also appealed to teachers to sat an exemplary example, instructing management to be relentless in cases of misconduct among educators.
“Teachers are, by nature, refined individuals and an example to the community. But how do some expect to be respected while being drunk in the classroom?” Nyusi asked.
In addition to conducting the meeting with secondary schools principals, President Nyusi also inaugurated a Centre for Tax and Customs Studies in Moamba, valued at around €9 million, which will train tax authority officials.
