Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi today congratulated Mozambican basketball player Pio Matos on the honourable mention he received from FIBA Africa in the context of distinguishing the best basketball players on the continent in the past decade.
“We are very honoured by this distinction, which carries with it the pride and enthusiasm of an entire nation,” a note from the Presidency distributed to the media today reads.
The Mozambican head of state wants the recognition afforded Pio Matos to serve as an incentive for athletes of his generation and generations to come.
For Filipe Nyusi, the mention of Pio Matos at a time when the country and the world are facing the Covid-19 pandemic demonstrates “the dedication and willingness that the Mozambican people have to overcome all adversities”.
Born in 1990, Pio da Silva Matos Júnior, who currently plays for Ferroviário de Maputo, has already been a national champion three times, and has represented the country on the continent several times. He was elected ‘Most Valuable Player’ in 2015.
