Supervising authorities in Mozambique say some pre-packaged products – those weighed and packed in the absence of the consumer – are not living up to the weight shown on the labels.
Mediafax quotes Ali Mussa, national director of operations in the National Institute of Economic Activities Inspection (INAE), as saying that issue is already known to the National Institute for Standardisation and Quality (INNOQ), and that action is underway to address the problem.
Speaking in an interview with Mediafax, Ali Mussa said: “We approached a new subject with shops in the Zimpeto wholesale market over the question of weights in pre-packaged products (…) In relation to these pre-packaged products, there is a phenomenon now occurring concerning the quantity declared on the label not matching the physical quantity of the product, so when you weigh it, less or more weight shows up.”
Ali Mussa appealed to consumers to remain vigilant and report any instances to the competent authorities. However, in cases where it is established that goods weigh more than the labels state, reporting the issue was not necessary.
“The INAE is not working alone in this field,” he added. we are working with the INNOQ, which oversees the calibration of scales.”
He also warned consumers agents takings their own scales along to confront shopkeepers, since these might also be inaccurate. “Over time,” he explained, “these things wear, and need recalibrating by those duly certified to this end.”
