Mozambique: Chapo wants parliament in Mocuba, thematic capitals
Expresso (from left to right): The king of Spain, Filipe VI, Portugal's president, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, Mozambique's president, Filipe Jacinto Nyusi and former Brazil's president, Fernando Henrique Cardoso, pose for an official photograph at the presidential palace in Lisbon, on Wednesday, March 9 2016.
President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa will make a state visit to Mozambique after the April 25 celebrations, DN reports a source close to the president as saying. The Portuguese head of state will come to Mozambique after visiting the Vatican and Spain on 17 March, and his visit is seen as marking an emphasis on foreign policy and strengthening relations with other Portuguese-speaking countries.
Mozambican president Filipe Nyusi had already announced on Wednesday that he had taken the opportunity of his presence at Marcelo’s inauguration to invite him to visit Mozambique.
The Portuguese president has connections with the country through his father, Baltazar Rebelo de Sousa, who lived in Mozambique and was governor-general of the then Portuguese colony between 1968 and 1970.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa’s trip will now be coordinated with the government led by Portugal’s prime minister António Costa.
The community of Portuguese-speaking countries is a priority for both the new president and the prime minister of Portugal.
