The Portuguese president on Tuesday advocated that Portugal and Mozambique should “tighten economic financial agreements in agriculture, industry, services” and “deepen political understandings, from justice to the administration of territory, from security to defence”.
At a dinner at the Palácio da Ajuda in Lisbon in honour of Mozambique’s President Filipe Nyusi, who yesterday began a state visit to Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa also said that the two countries should “create areas for joint efforts to rebuild what this year’s cyclones came to destroy” in Mozambique.
At the multilateral level, the Portuguese head of state called for joint action “for a fair partnership between Europe and Africa”, and insisted on the importance of free movement in the Lusophone area, stating: “Together we can and must do more for our strategy in the Community of Portuguese Language (CPLP), including in the mobility of our citizens.”
Speaking in Filipe Nyusi’s presence, President Rebelo de Sousa said that the Portuguese and Mozambican peoples were united in a “web of understandings and empathies and mobilisations” that constitute “a solid base” for Portugal and Mozambique to face these and other challenges together.
“We can and must strengthen financial and economic agreements in agriculture, industry and services, and increase investment and trade. Together, we can and must deepen political understandings, from justice to the administration of territory, from security to defence,” he said.
