Mozambique: Roadblocks bring Gaza towns to a halt

A woman of dual Portuguese-Mozambican citizenship kidnapped on June 2 has now been held captive for more than a week.
A source close to the victim’s family told Lusa that the ransom the kidnappers were demanding was beyond the family’s financial means.
“It’s a desperate situation. The family is unable to pay the amount demanded by the kidnappers,” the source said.
The Portuguese authorities are aware of the situation, and the Portuguese Consulate in Maputo had been told about the kidnapping, the source added.
Since 2012, Mozambique’s major cities, and the capital especially, have seen a wave of kidnappings, with victims mostly released unharmed on payment of a ransom, which the police have seemed unable to stop.
Several people, including police, have nevertheless been sentenced to heavy prison sentences for their involvement in this type of crime.
