The Portuguese Government and the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) today donated 200,000 masks to the province of Maputo, as part of the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The joint effort will have the double benefit of making reusable masks available to different sectors of society free of charge, providing them with greater protection from the pandemic,” the accompanying press release reads.
The two entities will also donate 5,000 protective suits to medical personnel and other health professionals in the southern Mozambique province.
Of the total of 200,000 masks, 100,000 are reusable, and will go to targeted entities in the province. The rest are surgical masks, destined for health professionals.
The joint support is part of the pandemic response plan coordinated by the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and involving Portugal, the Association of Portuguese Speaking Countries (PALOP) and Timor-Leste.
According to health authorities, Mozambique had by Monday registered a cumulative total of 1,219 positive cases of COVID-19, with nine deaths and 369 people accounted fully recovered.
The Covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 569,000 lives and infected more than 12.92 million people in 196 countries and territories, according to a report by the French AFP news agency.
The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected in late December 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China.
