A Portuguese citizen has been arrested in possession of 5,700 dollars in counterfeit bills, not far from the Machipanda border, which separates Mozambique and Zimbabwe, a source of the Manica police told Lusa.
The 53-year-old Portuguese man from Guimarães lives in Beira, Mozambique’s second-largest city. He was detained on Wednesday transporting the aforesaid amount of counterfeit money inside a purse and following a search operation conducted by the migration services, explained Elsidia Filipe, Manica Police Command’s spokesperson.
“We are dealing with a crime of money forgery, because this Portuguese citizen was held in possession of 57 fake $100 notes. He was found on the Mozambican side of the border between Mozambique and Zimbabwe,” said Elsidia Filipe, adding that he is being detained in the Manica district police command.
Being the manager of a trade firm in Beira, police explained, he makes frequent trips to Zimbabwe, a country that has adopted the use of the US dollar after an economic crisis in 2008 that resulted from a failed agrarian reform.
“This case of flagrante delicto is still under investigation,” said Elsidia Filipe, adding that a criminal case has been opened.
According to police, this is not the first case of arrest and apehension of counterfeit currency this year in Manica, and a group of young people who tried to exchange hundreds of fake 1,000 meticais notes had already been dismantled.
