A 45-year-old Portuguese businessman identified as João Filipe da Silva has been shot dead during a robbery at his home in Beira’s Macurungo neighbourhood. According to Diário de Moçambique, the crime, involving a group of individuals, occurred in the man’s Manganhe-1 house, at dawn on Thursday, August 10, the victim’s wife also present.
Sofala police spokesman Daniel Macuácua confirmed the incident and said that an investigation was under way.
“At dawn, an unknown number of unidentified individuals in possession of a pistol killed the citizen and seized three cell phones and a plasma television worth 35,500 meticais,” Macuácua said.
Macuácua added that a number of bullets struck the victim in the back and upper left arm.
“Given the seriousness of the situation, the police have activated all the mechanisms with a view to arresting the perpetrators of the murder. Evidence found at the crime scene has been collected and the corporation is already working,” he said.
The victim is known to have had multiple investments in Sofala province.
