A Portuguese citizen and another Mozambican, both businessmen, have been murdered in Huíla province, Angola, police said on Friday. Portuguese citizen Délcio dos Reis Cardoso and the Mozambican, Alvaro Morgado, both 64, both lived in Benguela province, on the southern coast of Angola, according to a police statement.
Benguela Criminal Investigation Service (SIC) reported the disappearance of the victims to police in the province of Huíla on Wednesday, the businessmen having departed for the municipality of Matala on January 20, allegedly on a business trip.
Police say that enquiries confirmed the deaths of businessmen on January 23 and 24, their bodies having now been found. Police were also successful in identifying and arresting the perpetrators, and have detained five people.
Police also recovered the car of the Portuguese citizen, in which the victims travelled from Benguela to Matala.
Preliminary police reports suggest the deaths occurred in the context of “an illicit business deal gone wrong”.
The police statement says the murders took place in Liculo, the bodies of the victims then being transported to Cabanas-Camontanha in the commune of Dongo, Jamba municipality, where they were buried by the perpetrators.
The case has been referred to the Attorney General’s Office, and the exhumation of the bodies for forensic examination and transfer to Lubango municipality in Huíla province is under way.
This is the second homicide involving Portuguese citizens in Angola recently.
The death of 85-year-old entrepreneur Adérito Florêncio Teté, a native of Trás-os-Montes who had lived in the province of Malanje for 60 years, was reported only last Sunday. He was found dead in the bedroom of his residence, his body exhibiting signs of violence.
